I have lived in the M. The fact that your boyfriend has grown up in America makes him a different case, but I can tell you that the pressure put on him to remain “Iranian” and true to his culture is almost certainly intense to say the least. This causes a strange and sometimes painful identity crisis for these children of mixed heritages and these problems can and usually do manifest themselves on the women in their lives, at least in some way, and more often than naught, negatively. I work for the US State Dept, and you wouldn’t believe the number of calls we get from families asking for our help, but we are powerless because the laws in these countries allow for this treatment of women and they were married of their own accord Of all these countries regarding women s rights! Persian rugs, in a nutshell, are famous for their traditional floral and curvilinear motifs which display intricate artistic designs and elaborate colors. Persians are the pioneers of the carpet weaving industry and through several hundred years of practicing this art, have achieved a level of unparalleled finesse and excellence. Furthermore, these rugs are seen as a symbol of prestige, wealth, and refinement.
Additionally, Persian rugs are one of the major exports of the Iranian economy. For an Iranian, a house without a hand-woven Persian rug is only a cage of bricks. During his rule, the rug weaving industry was divided into tribes and villages where craftsmen weaved carpets for personal use. Each of these carpets were distinct in their patterns and designs with each relatable to a particular region and tribe.
During the 5th century BCE, wool and silk woven Persian rugs became a symbol of royalty and prestige and in the 8th century AD, special prayer mats were woven for kings and royals with floral and calligraphic designs. The Sassanid period is notable for introducing flat woven and embroidered rugs. Some of these pieces are still preserved in museums and churches throughout Europe, and the fragments are popular for their intrinsically woven artistic designs. Initially, Persian rugs were woven for personal use by the tribes but after the Arab and Seljuq invasion, Persian rug weaving was greatly influenced by the Turko-Persian traditions which emerged in that era and consequently appealed to a wider audience.
The Persian carpet industry was the most prosperous during the Safavid dynasty where the ruler Shah Abbas encouraged artistic weaving and formed a program for restructuring the economy of Iran, establishing workshops and hired the most skillful weavers and artists from all over Iran.

Persian culture is generally conservative in dealings between the sexes, although many younger Iranians from major metropolitan areas like Tehran are more likely to have adopted some Western ideas about dating, marriage, etc.
In Arab culture, these situations are very controlled. When the women, especially, interact too personally with men in public, it hurts and damages family honor, which is highly favored and carefully maintained in Arab countries. Women and men are viewed with much respect, and when that respect is broken, it hurts not only the person but the whole family is looked down upon.
In Western Society, single men and women, whether attracted to each other or not, will interact pretty freely, of course with a personal bubble and a good amount of respect. It is similar in the Western culture, that when women do something that is considered or viewed as inappropriate or wrong, they lose honor and respect, more than if men did the same thing.
But, in either case, it is more dishonoring to that single person, and not so much to the family. Singles are more personally responsible for their actions, and not wholly for their entire immediate and extended family. But here, it shows the feelings of an honest Muslim and his personal feelings. Arab men and women avoid situations where they would or could be alone. Even in Saudi Arabia, when a man and women are in a car alone together, they are pulled over and checked to see if they are married—or else they would be arrested.
Arabs gain a negative impression of you if you display too much affection towards the opposite sex. It is actually forbidden, by the Arab social code, to publicly display intimacy, even when married.
